Hello everyone! I'm Karen orginally from the Islands of the Philippines and have been back and forth from there and California over the years. I'm nomadic by nature so it's surprising that I've been in LA for the past 6 years (my longest residence by far!).
I'm a social worker by formal training but I'm not the typical "steal your kids from your homes" direct practitioner nor do I serve as a therapist (I quit that long time ago). I am what you can consider a macro social worker whose focus is more on building and strengthening communities, organizations and eventually government systems.
Lately I've been missing in action due to work (I'm a Program Administrator for Charles R Drew University), school (I'm finishing up my last course in my MSW program and I'm also applying for another program at Drew), research and community organizing (I've been working to institutionalize the Idealist meeting at the Charles Drew University and have also been getting ready to attend the Chicago Idealist Campus Conference)
So I know all this stuff isn't an excuse because I'm fully invested in all areas including being a part of IWF! I've been reading the introductions and am ashamed that I'm going on for this long but I'm excited to be a part of this and really look forward to working with all of you! I promise to do better in checking in on a weekly basis if not more often!!
